Tree Planting

Growing Trees in Tsada: The Basics

Tsada's location (600m high) means trees need to handle hot, dry summers and cold, frosty winters. The soil is mostly chalky and doesn't hold a lot of nutrients.

Good Tree Choices:

  • Native Trees (Best Bets):
    • Calabrian Pine: A tough local pine that grows well.

    • Golden Oak: Cyprus's national tree, unique and hardy.

    • Olive: Great for fruit and looks, handles drought and frost well.

    • Carob: Very drought resistant, good for fruit and shade.

    • Mediterranean Cypress: Good for a tall, narrow look or as a windbreak.

  • Good Non-Native Options:
    • Judas Tree: Pretty pink flowers in spring, tough and adaptable.

    • London Planetree: Big shade tree, very hardy but needs space.

    • Pomegranate: Good for fruit, handles the climate and soil well.

    • Junipers: Many types, very tough and good for different garden uses.

Fruit Trees:

  • Good Choices: Olives, Carobs, and Pomegranates do well.

  • Possible with Care: Figs can work if you pick a hardy type and maybe improve the soil. Almonds, Apples, Pears, and Cherries are risky because their spring flowers can get damaged by frost.

  • Not Recommended: Regular Oranges, Lemons, etc., are likely to be damaged by frost.

Key Things for Planting:

  • Pick sunny spots with good air flow (especially for fruit trees).

  • Make sure the soil drains well.

  • Water new trees regularly until they're established; after that, most of these won't need much extra water.

  • Protect young or sensitive trees from frost.
